Chamber of Young Snow and HKU Libraries Co-Host Exhibition: 1:1 Replica of Dunhuang Cave and Over 100 Artworks on Display

Chamber of Young Snow is collaborating for the first time with The University of Hong Kong Libraries to present the three-month “Dreamlike Dunhuang: Recreating the Grandeur of Dunhuang” exhibition. Running from June 7 to September 7 at HKU Libraries, the exhibition is open to the public free of charge. This marks the first exhibition in 12 years where the Dunhuang Academy has partnered with a Hong Kong academic institution and private organization.

Six Major Themes and Over 100 Dunhuang Artworks

The exhibition, held at HKU Libraries, is structured around six major themed sections and features more than 100 Dunhuang artworks. Some of these are classified as protected cultural relics. Notably, this event marks the first time a hyper-realistic 1:1 scale replica of Mogao Cave 45 from Dunhuang is showcased in Hong Kong. The replica covers about 25 square meters and stands nearly 5 meters tall. Inside, all four walls are adorned with Tang dynasty mural designs, and the ceiling meticulously recreates the original cave’s unique slanted visual effect. The cave also contains seven distinct polychrome sculptures with remarkable craftsmanship.

Digital Immersion on the Third Floor

The third floor of the exhibition features an immersive digital art experience highlighting the distinctive style of Dunhuang Buddhist art. In addition to presenting various Dunhuang murals, a large digital animation display brings static mural figures to life, allowing them to move and “dance” before visitors.
This exhibition is a signature element of the “The University of Hong Kong Libraries Chamber of Young Snow Culture Festival.” In addition to the exhibition, other popular events include five public lectures, two cultural performances, and eight workshops, all receiving enthusiastic public response.
