Last Saturday, just before the typhoon struck, I spent two and a half hours at the “Dreamlike Dunhuang” exhibition at The University of Hong Kong Libraries, staying until closing time, yet I was still far from examining all the exhibit labels and explanatory texts… On Monday morning, after Typhoon Ewiniar had passed, I returned to HKU to continue viewing what I had missed. The gallery was peaceful and quiet with few visitors.

The exhibition utilizes all three floors of The University of Hong Kong Libraries to welcome “Dreamlike Dunhuang.” The centerpiece is undoubtedly the 1:1 full-scale recreation of Mogao Cave 45. The replica features a square layout with dougong caisson ceiling, and the Buddha alcove is adorned with seven polychrome sculptures: at the center sits the Buddha, flanked by Ānanda, Kāśyapa, two bodhisattvas, and …
