“Dreamlike Dunhuang: Recreating the Grandeur of Dunhuang” Exhibition! 1:1 Mogao Cave Replica and Over 100 Dunhuang Artworks | Weekend Weekly

The University of Hong Kong Libraries is currently hosting one of the year’s most anticipated cultural events— “Dreamlike Dunhuang: Recreating the Grandeur of Dunhuang Millennium Exhibition.” Jointly curated by HKU Libraries, the Dunhuang Academy, and Chamber of Young Snow, this exhibition marks the first time in Hong Kong that a 1:1 precision replica of Dunhuang Mogao Cave 45 has been presented. Offering a fully immersive experience of Dunhuang’s arts and culture, this showcase is highly recommended to all who are interested in heritage and history.

1:1 Mogao Cave Replica — Masterpieces of High Tang Murals Arrive in Hong Kong

The main highlight is the 1:1 full-scale replica of Mogao Cave 45, entirely recreated in Hong Kong for the first time. Covering around 25 square meters and close to 5 meters high, the grotto features Tang dynasty murals and painted sculptures on all four walls and the caisson ceiling. In the center, the Buddha is seated on a Sumeru throne, flanked by bodhisattvas and heavenly kings, reviving the pinnacle of Dunhuang grotto artistry. The graceful forms of the bodhisattvas and the stately presence of the heavenly kings transport visitors into the splendid Buddhist palace atmosphere of a thousand years ago.
