About the Talk
The Huayan School is one of the major traditions of Chinese Buddhism, and the Avatamsaka Sutra (Huayan Jing) has long been revered in China for the breadth and depth of its vision. At the heart of Huayan thought is the idea that “one is all, and all is one”—a vision of the universe in which all phenomena are profoundly interconnected.
The Buddhist murals and sculptures preserved in the Dunhuang caves offer a remarkable visual record through which this philosophical and aesthetic tradition can be explored.
Led by Dr. Li Shi Cheng, this talk will examine Huayan-related imagery in the Mogao and Yulin Caves and consider how these visual forms express ideas that have deeply influenced Chinese philosophy and aesthetics. Extending the discussion into the present, Dr. Li will also consider possible resonances between the Huayan vision of an interconnected cosmos and ideas emerging from contemporary quantum physics, opening a dialogue across art, philosophy and science.
