When Dunhuang is mentioned, the image of its caves instantly comes to mind. For those eager to witness the beauty of these grottoes, the “Dreamlike Dunhuang: Recreating the Grandeur of Dunhuang” exhibition, co-hosted by Chamber of Young Snow and The University of Hong Kong Libraries, offers a unique opportunity. This is also the Dunhuang Academy’s first large-scale project in cooperation with a Hong Kong higher education institution and a private organization.
The exhibition showcases 78 representative pieces or sets of Dunhuang artworks across six main themed zones. Its highlight is the full-scale, 1:1 precision replica of Mogao Cave 45—an impressive structure measuring about 25 square meters in area and nearly 5 meters in height. The cave’s four walls and caisson ceiling are adorned with Tang dynasty mural designs, and it features seven unique polychrome sculptures, faithfully recreating the sacred Buddhist ambiance of the Dunhuang caves. On the third floor, an immersive digital arts area reflects the aesthetics of Dunhuang Buddhist art, where ten distinct Mogao Cave caisson patterns are displayed as lightboxes suspended from the ceiling, inviting visitors to recline and gaze upward in appreciation.
